culloden HISTORY WITH A MODERN TWIST

Opening in December, the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) will unveil their brand new visitor centre and modern GPS technologies at Culloden. In partnership with Zolk Ltd, a technical design company specialising in GPS technologies, the NTS have developed an innovative method of interpreting the story of the famous clan battle.

Upon arrival to the new visitor centre, visitors receive hand-held PDAs, ready loaded with interactive characters that witnessed or were involved in the battle. These become activated by state of the art GPS technology whilst you move around the site. Incorporating the latest historical and archaeological evidence, the PDAs will tell the course of events through fresh eyes. Multilanguage formatted, the NTS has put a high importance on the Gaelic influence of this site in the interpretation as a high proportion of Gaelic speakers fought on both sides at the Battle.

The PDAs are a first for the NTS and it’s a great method of engaging with the visitor - an interactive element will generate excitement around this historic site and visitors will undoubtedly enjoy using the technology.
Exhibiting at Tourism Innovation Day (28th February, Hampden Park Glasgow), Zolk Ltd will bring along PDAs to demonstrate how they designed and linked this technology with one of Scotland’s oldest battle scenes!
