About TiG

Tourism Innovation Group (TIG) brings together over 50 tourism businesses and support agencies with a mission to encourage growth and drive long-term strategic change in Scottish tourism through innovation.

Tourism is a major industry in Scotland employing 215,000 people and generating over £4 billion for the economy each year. Changing market trends and increasing consumer demands are now making it imperative that the tourism sector embraces innovation and new technologies to compete successfully in a volatile global marketplace.

Innovation is not always a quantum leap. It can take many forms, from exploiting brand new products and services to making incremental improvements in performance and business processes using creativity and collaboration. TIG believes that innovation is essential to creating and maintaining a competitive edge for tourism in Scotland.

In driving strategic change through innovation TIG takes the following approach:

  • Identifying and focusing on the key strategic issues where TIG can act as a catalyst for change.
  • Highlighting the importance of innovation in adding value to the tourism product and in producing bottom-line benefits.
  • Nurturing innovation so that it becomes embedded in every aspect of tourism in Scotland.

TIG believes that Collaboration, both within tourism and across other sectors also plays a key role alongside innovation in accelerating and maintaining Scotland’s competitiveness as a world-class destination.

TIG’s activities cover:

1. Support for public sector and industry-led innovation.

2. The incubation of new projects up to the point of implementation and delivery by public sector agencies or private companies.

3. Five pro-active teams working within specific sectors linked to tourism. Each team looks at innovative ways of collaborating to maximise mutual cross-sector benefits. The five teams are:

  • Arts & Culture Team
  • Food & Tourism Team
  • Global Perspectives Team
  • Sustainability Team
  • Application of Technology Team
