RE: Should south west form network?

So what is your opinion on the marketing of culture and tradition for tourism benefit? considering the economic downturn they've done rather well, but what about the areas that weren't involved? It appears to me that whilst the 'attractive' places have benefited, the rest may be out of pocket, economically and culturally, almost a 'pooling' of inward investment. I had written a post before but I hadn't been online for a while and it was lost, is was a lot more to the point. All of this is 'off the record' and I think your passion on the subject is fantastic.

No, it's not good enough, I agree, especially in light of all the money being spent to increase tourism recently (albeit urban based), the general consensus is that actions are not representative of the masses, that is what I'm trying to get at. Basically, the jobs a bad'un, and I'm trying to get that across, by highlighting the importance and significance of voices that aren't being 'measured'.
I sense your opinion is strong, if you don't mind me asking, are you a business owner?

Tourism is a HUGE part of my research, as the marketing aimed to increase tourism and therefor economy, many places missed out on this, and where is the longevity of Government involvement to boost rural economy? Why not market those places that have 'grass-roots' traditions and identities, the whole spectrum, and not just..well...Edinburgh and Glasgow? You ask if there should be a Tourism minister for Scotland, does his imply that you think he is not doing his job? Thanks for agreeing help, I don't know yet if I'll be holding this group, I imagine that my findings will require one though.

RE: Should south west form network?

Hi, sorry it has been so long to engage a reply, Trying to get the foundations down and now, sweet success! How has the work been coming? I'm embarking on two weeks of interviews to try to establish the scope (or indeed the existence) of social impact analysis after homecoming, of which so far I have found none, perhaps that 'they' asked if the homecoming ' TV advertisement' produced a feeling of 'Scottishness' among Scots who watched it could be regarded as pre-event analysis, but I disagree, as thats what imagery is meant to do, eh? (Watch a sad film makes you sad, watch 'The Beach' makes you want to go to Thailand with Mr. Di Caprio). Place marketing is the real concern, the cities really cashed-in, (still waiting for the economic impact analysis, which is the main objective of HC unfortunately), the towns and rural areas I feel have had their local identities and cultures 'over-ridden', which I fear will snowball, and cultures will be forgotten. BUT, my research project doesn't allow for my rantings and opinions! I must be objective. So the purpose is to highlight the importance of the social.
I am toying with the idea of a focus group, about 6-8 people representative of various areas of Scotland, If i go ahead with this, would you like to be involved? It would be an online chat room, as I'm running out of time to transcribe everything!!!! I'd send various information and consent forms, topics, time-scales etc etc.

Keep the faith, indeed! :)

Hi Helen,

I graduated from SAC Auchincruive near Ayr a couple of years back and am sitting on my backside trying to get tourism working in the south west. I find myself volunteering for just about everything going to make my area better so I'm open to suggestions.
If you Google: Burns Corridor Network, or Facebook me by following the "Robert Burns International Airport Petition".

RE: Should south west form network?

Hi, I've just registered for this site. My area of interest lies within the misrepresentation, and indeed the 'sanitisation' of Scottish areas in the pursuit of tourism. I am an undergraduate student studying events management and currently doing my research project around the above topics, particularly in light of the Homecoming Scotland events of last year. I am in agreement with what you have highlighted above. and am surprised that there is a lack of discussion from other members. You appear to have insight into the 'back stage' of these types of events, was hoping you could suggest a site where there is a more rigorous debate at hand? Or we can just 'banter' between ourselves? what do you say? I am collecting a portfolio of relevant themes of debate within the citizens of Scotland to pinpoint the areas most in need of research, within the boundary of social impacts.

Hope to receive a reply, thanks! H.

Homecoming Scotland 2010

Are there any plans to "keep the pot Boiling" through 2010?

Seeing as Robert Burns' 250th birthday will be in 2010 (his 1st birthday being in 1760).
We can't better this years visitor numbers as the Gathering was a fantastic crowd puller and will be missing next year but now we know who is interested in Burns. With the opening of the new Burns' Museum we need to promote the Burns' Corridor to the UK and others.

Make potential visitors aware of just what the south west has to offer. Before we do that, we need to make locals aware of what their communities have to offer. Burns' Corridor is not just Alloway and Dumfries, it is all of the towns, villages, farms, in between, beside and beyond.

From Largs to Gretna, there are places which Burns wrote about while visiting them on business and/or pleasure but there are also places we miss which have connections with iconic figures whose lives affected the world. See Burns' Corridor "Icon List" at: http://www.robertburnsfederation.co.uk/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1284 for a sample of them. Perhaps "it was something in the watter" but there are people within this 15 mile tract of land who we admire for their artistry, innovation and/or bravery, and there are many people who would love to see where these icons lived, learned, loved, drammed or died if only they knew about them.

Tarmacadam, Gas Lighting, The Bicycle, Steam Navigation, The Steamboat, The Pneumatic Tyre, Penicillan, The US Navy, you name it.

Invite them to the home of Innovation.

INNovation

Every small town and village has its icon and its stories from the past, discussed in detail in the local heritage centre (usually known as the pub), where the atmosphere is not artificial. Visit a local bar and learn the history of the area; Inns have always been the hearts of settlements throughout the civilised world, they were where laws were made and courts held; places where past INNovators discussed their theories, poems, novels, with their peers, just as we do today (DNA being a good example). How many pubs boast that they were a "Burns' howf"?

Nowadays local INNs, which create employment, let locals catch up with local gossip and allow visitors to interact, especially in the friendly south west of Scotland, are closing down by the hundreds. A network of heritage INNS would benefit every area. Granting local inns funds with which to purchase local heritage displays and INNformation outlets would be worthwhile. Perhaps 'rates relief' for providing a community service could be made available as they would be promoting the area, providing tourist services, advertising local places of interest, etc.

If every INN displayed local families coats-of-arms of the 14th century it would provide a talking point for locals and visitors alike, especially at this time, when geneology is on everyones lips.

Should south west form Framework?

The south west of Scotland seems to have so much potential to become a visitor attraction.
The "A" Frame
Consisting of the A75, A76 & A77.

The towns of Gretna, Stranraer, Largs form a triangle which is filled with homes of iconic figures who changed the world.
By now most people should know that Robert Burns; was born in Alloway; lived learned and loved in Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire; and died in Dumfries but few know of the others connected to the area. The A76 alone gives us numerous iconic figures, some can be seen at: http://www.robertburnsfederation.co.uk/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1284

The centre of the triangle is occupied with the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Reserve (The Galloway 'n' SABRe), adding to its magnetism to a varied customer spectrum but how many potential visitors know of its existence?

Every small town and village has its icon and its stories from the past, discussed in detail in the local heritage centre (usually known as the pub), whose atmosphere cannot be replicated. Visit a local bar and learn the history of the area; These places are where past INNovators discussed their theories, poems, novels, with their peers, just as we do today (DNA is a good example).
Annual increase of international tourism receipts

Almost all prominent resorts and hotels in Kerala give much importance to international tourism. This is due to the fact that the earnings during the peak tourism season are much more than that gained during the off season. Another notable aspect could be the size of travel receipts and their growth during favorable tourism seasons. With each passing year, the prominent resorts and hotels are continuously revamping their marketing strategies to attract more visitors to the state. Some of the prominent resorts even offer web pages and information brochures in scores of international languages.

The average annual increase in tourism receipts is rather significant since the liberalization of the Indian economy in early 1990. Until the early 1990s the major revenues from tourism went to the advanced countries. It can be seen that the major chunk of tourism receipts and also their arrivals were shared by the continent of Europe followed by the North American region. Thus, the predominant beneficiaries were the developed countries and, indeed, only a small share went to the lesser developed countries.

In Kerala packages were developed to attract people with different tastes and preferences. Such an approach became popular rather late. If package tourism model had been introduced rather earlier, more earnings from tourism would have resulted in phenomenal changes in the present tourism infrastructures. After the introduction of packaged tourism in the 1990s there was a significant increase in the annual international tourism receipts.

The significance of the tourism packages on offer is that all the packages are packed with enough leisure, health and massage options and a host of culinary delights. Not only that, a tourist has the freedom to avail additional benefits at local costs. Due to the increasing advances in e-commerce, a tourist can make the necessary bookings through the credit card from his home country itself. Not only that, he can even make a virtual tour through the luxury amenities that he is going to avail during a particular package. Hotels and resorts that have made such options for a visitor have been able to attract more visitors.
